I was also in the dark and couldn't bear to listen to continuous chit-cat amongst the investigators. Boring and didn't finish it.

This is the first of his many books I've read. The plot was excellent - white slave trade in Florida. However, it kind of read like a travelogue, steering the reader from one point to another. I wouldn't recommend this, unless they enjoy a spiritual aspect to reading. This is the first of his many books I've read. The plot was excellent - white slave trade in Florida. I read this classic many years ago. I was enthralled by the plot and characters - good versus evil as the main issue.

Wasn't sure I would like this book. I was wrong. Thought it was edge-of-your-seat exciting. The plot moved back and forth amongst the characters which gave it a deeper insight. I'd definitely recommend this one.

An enthralling and informative novel that follows three generations of Koreans caught up in the colonization of Korea by Japan. The indiscriminate prejudice and abuse by the Japanese is another shameful example of Japan - in China, Korea and, not the least, of becoming an ally of Germany and their attack on Hawaii.
Events lead the young pregnant matriarch, Sunja, to leave Korea, wed a minister, and move to Japan. Hardships continue for many years - illnesses, death and a continuing struggle to rise out of extreme poverty.
Ultimately, through the ownership of Pachinko parlors, the family rises to wealth. Nevertheless, wealth is not what cements this family together; rather, it is loyalty, mutual commitment and love that is their secret weapon.

A woman fueled by a need for revenge for the death of her son. This leads her to rash acts of violence that lead nowhere. There was a bit of repetitive writing that resulted in the novel being longer than necessary.

Although it had some pluses as a thriller, the ghost aspect didn't appeal to me. Didn't finish the book.

Mofina never fails to provide intense and intriguing mysteries . I read this one within one day. His characters are so well-defined, one would almost believe they are true actors in this horrific murder spree. Highly recommended.

Enduring love through pain-filled years. Mother and daughter separated during WWII. The loneliness experienced by Shira is far surpassed by the desperate search for her daughter by her Mother. A compelling and beautiful reflection of the horrendous experiences of so many during that time. Highly recommended.Enduring love through pain-filled years. Mother and daughter separated during WWII. A captivating novel about life in the former life of KATE. Suspense lends itself to an exciting novel of life and death in this Amish town.

This book provided me with a missing dimension to my knowledge of Korea during WWII. I am guilty of not being aware of the plight of the Korean people: their own language being illegal outside their homes, forced to take Japanese names, and living in fear of their 'masters'. Of historical note is the fact that the Japanese took 100,000 to 200,000 girls from conquered countries to serve as "Comfort Women" for the Imperial soldiers. Fortunately, the Americans did not bomb the Koreans.
Sun-Hee and her brother Tae-Yul experience the hardships, together with their Mother and Father for the duration. It is a masterful portrayal of life in Korea for its citizens. It took me 125 pages to finally put this one down. The plot moved sooo slowly and finally I couldn't bear wasting my time of a novel that, for me, didn't cut it.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others by this author. Although it didn't lack for murder and mayhem, it lacked the spell-binding suspense of previous novels. Nevertheless, those who are fans of Helen Fields will certainly like this latest.

This is the 7th Burkholder novel I've read and have to say this was the most exciting and gripping of them all (so far). She is an amazing writer. As the murders add up, Kate comes to a frightening conclusion. Highly recommended.

Aside from those who claim Ireland as their original homeland, little is known about the horrendous blight that caused the deaths and terrible suffering on the part of those Irish who farmed crops and livestock for the British Lords who lived in England. They were virtual slaves who lived on potatoes, a few cabbages and turnips. When the Great Famine occurred in the mid-19th century, hundreds of thousands of families were left to literally starve to death. This is referred to as "The Great Famine". Unable to pay rents to the Landlords, they were left destitute - their meager huts torn down and families cast into certain starvation and death. Into this nightmare enters Ginny, Ray and their four children. Their story evolves slowly but painfully.
In today's time, we experience Majella dealing with depression after the birth of Emma. Her trials and tribulations are further exacerbated when she finds the diary of her maternal ancestor - Ginny. She moves forward slowly to deal with this 'inheritance'.
An excellent story of survival - both past and present

I've read his past books and enjoyed ''Daughter of Moloka'i' very much. It again how illustrates the lack empathy or compassion Americans have towards other nationalities. I'm glad I didn't listen to myself and rented the book. It deals with relationships among Diana's family. Although disliked by her children and in-laws, the author gives a more complete insight into her character. That helped me to have empathy and sympathy for her. A real page-turner...couldn't put it down. I'd definitely recommend this, although it might not be something for men.I'm glad I didn't listen to myself and rented the book.
