Guthrie should have stayed with songwriting and left the field of literature to real writers like Hemingway and Lawrence, particularly when he tried to interject sex into his "novel." The book was packed with interesting colloquialisms of the era, but the sex in the barn was contrived and out of touch with the rest of the short story. Clearly, those in the movie industry back in the thirties knew what they were doing when they turned this one down.
