A really good mystery novel. I love Ann Cleeves as an author, particularily her recent 4 books set in the Shetland Islands. This one is a Vera Stanhope book. But you don't really need to have read any of the other books with her as the lead detective. Ann Cleeves does a great job in moving the plot forward and slowly introducing possible suspects. The setting of her books (in this case rural england near newcastle) are always really interesting and different then ones by american or canadian mystery authors. My only critique would be that this novel has a large cast of characters and at times I kept forgetting who was who. Also, there are a lot of english terms that take getting used to but this also adds to the authenticity of the book. A great read for mystery fans.
