For no apparent reason a disturbed young man kills himself in the home of an aging schoolteacher. The effect of his suicide reverberates throughout her small circle of friends and dredges up some bittersweet memories from the past. But what really happened? Loneliness, despair and regret permeate David Hare's bleak teleplay as his cast of characters yearn for human contact while conversely keeping each other at arm's length. The stellar cast is magnificent, the sharp dialogue keenly delivered, but the film's emotional content often takes a backseat to the cerebral causing some of the more passionate scenes to appear weak and contrived.
