For me, this was a nice introduction to Navajo traditions and left me wanting to know more about Native American culture. However, some critics argue that it "cheapens" cultural information which clouded the lens through which I read this one. It is meant for younger middle-grade readers and features strong main characters who are typically marginalized in juvenile fiction. I liked it. I didn't love it. I would definitely recommend it to a fifth-grade audience looking for an action-packed, representational chapter book.
What an adventure! This swift, funny, and immersive read introduces readers to many characters in Navajo (Dine') creation stories. It’s a delight.
If you haven’t heard of the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, I’m here for you. It’s a small middle grade-focused branch under the Disney-Hyperion publishing house that focuses on own voices traditional stories. Everything they have put out is exceptional.
Good story with likable kids who aren't perfect.
Great way to learn about the holy people of Dine (aka Navajo).
I am hoping for a sequel. I have already read her other two books.
On my for later list because Mrissa on dreamwidth says : "So this is a heck of a quest. Trains and giant birds and personal growth and magical arrows and things that you would want on a quest! It is fun and it has brave kid protagonists and they eat Cheetos and fight baddies and basically I think you will like it and also some kids you know might like it! Okay? Okay!"
At times heartwarming and at others heartbreaking. Kids who love fantasy and super heroes will definitely want to read this book from Rick Riordan presents. Nizhoni is twelve and she is starting to see monsters. When her dad's new boss is one of them, the action begins. Nizhoni, her brother Mac, and her best friend Davery escape Albuquerque on a train and begin their quest to visit the Spider Woman, stock up on weapons, and get to the house of the sun. Filled with Navajo legends and vocabulary with a glossary in the back. A great addition to middle grade fiction that is long overdue.
