With the kind of outrageous humor that made Linsay Sands a bestseller and the larger than life characters that put Nalini Singh on the map, Shelly Laurenston-author of the New York Times bestselling Pride series-introduces a new paranormal romance series featuring a band of tough-as-nails female fighters and the men who aren't afraid to stand up to them.

Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn't for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.

In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig oVigo Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life-but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies- cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines.

But Vig can't give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths- Kera's discipline, Vig's loyaltyaand the Crows' sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.

The Unleashing (Call of the Crows, #1) by Shelly Laurenston is the first book in a new paranormal series based on Norse mythology. This is the first book I have read by this author and it definitely will not be the last. I picked this up because the second book is on Net Galley and I like to read paranormal series in order due to the world-building. This author’s writing is witty, sharp and entertaining.
Kera Watson is an ex-Marine who survived two tours in Afghanistan and then came home and was killed behind the coffee shop she was managing. Ludvig ‘Vig” Rundstom is a regular that Kera believed to be a damaged vet that she always took care of, but he is a Viking Raven and as Kera is breathing her last, he called on Skuld to make her a Crow and give her a second life. Kera has to learn to trust and go to battle with her new Crow sisters while learning all about her new life among the Norse clans.
This book was a fast and easy read. I loved all the characters introduced in this first book especially Brodie Hawaii, Kera’s pitbull. I have a rescued pittie and was so happy everyone loved her. The world-building was different and interesting. I am so looking forward to getting right into the next book in this series and I also need to check out more of this author’s work.

First let me say, I'm interested in what happens in the next book, BUT it took me multiple attempts to get into this book. That has never happened with a Laurenston/Aiken book before. I appreciate that the author wants to head in a new directions, but this one started very confusing and chaotic. I would not put this type of book in a category that needs a lot of thought - it's supposed be entertaining, not difficult to get into.
