A very fun classic adventure story! You cant go wrong with pirate adventure!
An incredible, fast-paced adventure story that was hard to put down! I thoroughly enjoyed this classic book with unforgettable, complex characters and fascinating plot twists. It is one of the most influential books about pirates in history.
This is one of the first books I remember reading. I've reread it recently and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. It is one of those books, like Gulliver's Travels and Huckleberry Finn, that stand in a class all their own.
Stevenson's Treasure Island is the definitive adventure novel from which all pirate stereotypes derive. I recall reading the author's forward in one edition, where he actually apologized for publishing yet another pirate story (apparently the genre was popular well before 1883); whatever those other authors wrote is long since forgotten.
The book’s protagonist, Jim Hawkins, coincidentally obtains a map leading to treasures on a deserted island and boards a ship to get there. Among his companions are the generous Dr.Livesey and the righteous Captain Smollett, but there are also a group of pirates, headed by Long John Silver, who secretly plan a mutiny once they find the treasures.
I had read this story in Chinese as a child because it was a popular Western children’s book for parents to buy. However, the memory had blurred over the years and after discovering that its author was the same as the one who wrote Jekyll & Hyde (which I also read & reviewed recently), I decided to give it another read!
Treasure Island is really different from Jekyll & Hyde. Although both have the Gothic elements such as pirates and double identities, TI puts much more emphasis on the adventure and character and plot developments, as opposed to J&H which focuses on the mystery itself. .
I can tell why people often see TI as a coming-of-age story. Jim Hawkins is an extremely likable young man, smart, brave and sometimes headstrong. The morals and personalities of the other major characters vary across a colorful spectrum, and each is adequately developed for the reader to have a stake in their well-being, which is important for a conflict-centered work like this.
Some say that a moral of TI is that good people are rewarded and the bad are punished, but I disagree. Not all bad people are punished — Long John Silver escapes at the end with a portion of the treasure, and some loyal seamen were killed because they refused to join the pirates. Rather, I believe that part of what Jim learns as his lesson is that rewards do not necessarily match with moralistic values, and the best we can do is to follow our hearts and hope for the best.

An all-time classic. Recommended reading for all ages. Let your imagination run wild. A terrific story with memorable characters.
Originally published back in 1883 - "Treasure Island" is an adventure novel written by Scottish-born author, Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894).
In this volume Stevenson narrates a tale of "buccaneers and buried gold." This book's influence is enormous on popular perceptions of pirates, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an “X,” schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen bearing parrots on their shoulders.
"Treasure Island" was originally considered a coming-of-age story and is noted for its atmosphere, characters, and action. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. This edition of "Treasure Island" is pleasantly illustrated by Newell Convers Wyeth.

The climax of the story wasn't very clear, actually. I think it could hv been elaborated, but other than that the book had a lot of original ideas , and great character development!
