This is an epic of frontier life. It took me 100 pages to fall in love with its unforgettable characters and follow them on their journeys for 800 more pages!
It is a classic in the western genre but for any reader of historical fiction.
A stunning achievement.

I decided to read this book because it's considered one of the best American novels and actress Diane Lane, whom I greatly respect, recommended it on the PBS Great American Read (she portrayed Lorie in the TV dramatization). Since I had never read a western, I thought it was time I did and gave it a try, even though it's very long. I absolutely loved the TV drama which I saw 20 years ago. Author Larry McMurtry is a fine writer and tells this tale in rich details You meet many interesting people. I looked forward to reading it every night before I went to bed. I love the character Augustus McCrae --- who wouldn't? He is one of the best characters ever in a book, now one of my favorite. Some of the things he said made me laugh out loud. If you like adventure, this books is for you. It is indeed gritty. The violence and hardships made me cringe. This book is not for the faint of heart. What really intrigued me were the female characters: Lorie, Clara and Elmira who play very important roles in this story. It wasn't the best book I ever read but I really like it. It did not, however, knock my socks off as I had expected. The TV show did. Nonetheless it's worth the time and effort. It is a great escape and will take you on one hell of a ride.

A novel of epic splendor: I was enthralled from beginning g to end: the landscape, the characters, the women, Indian presence: a time lost brought to life: I intend to reread this book next year, same time in order to focus more completely on the characters, their relationships, how the landscape affected them individually:
I read this many years ago, this current reading was focused on plot, what came next: so looking forward to digging deeper into all aspects of this brilliant novel

To quote another reader's review, don't be intimidated by the size of this book! Once I saw how thick it was when I went to pick it up from the hold shelf, I almost didn't check it out. That would have been a huge mistake.

I have never felt more rewarded by finishing a book, and not only due to its size. This book was utterly addictive - I would wake up thinking about what I read the night before, craving my next chance to read it. When a day went by where I didn't get to read any of the book, I was literally sad!

I never would think a young female like myself could enjoy an 800+ page western novel - I WAS WRONG! It was rewarding to finish this book because it had some of the strongest character development I have ever read. I feel like I personally know each and every character in the book. The writing style is simple enough to make it an addictive read, but detailed enough to really give a sense of each individual character. Which is important, because Lonesome Dove has a pretty sizable list of characters!

In short, Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove is a classic and a story I will never forget!
