Wendy Mass tells the story of Beauty and the Beast, as never heard before!

When you're stuck with the name Beauty, people expect a lot from you - like beauty and grace and courage and a sense of style. But what if you have none of these things? What if all you like to do is read books and search for odd objects that other people drop? Oh, and you have a perfect older sister who really should have had your name instead of you.

And when you're a prince, you're supposed to be athletic and commanding and brave and tall. But what if you are none of those things? What if all you like to do is play the bagpipes (badly), study the stars, and try to figure out how to make worms live forever? Oh, and you also have a perfect older brother who is a lot more princely than you'll ever be.

My favorite part is how Riley's invisible family are way different than they usually are! You get to see their personalities really come out. A very clever remix of The Beauty and the Beast!!

So funny! I was laughing out loud at multiple points, which is unusual for me, and I could not put it down. This retelling gave more characterization to both Beauty (who isn't) and the Beast. One interesting character was Handsome (who wasn't) and his relationship with Beauty. Also hilarious was the invisible royal family and their role in creating the Beast. Overall, a humorous, enjoyable fairy tale.

Really interesting! I loved the book and how it twisted the original classic and included the beast's/ Riley's story as well.

This is part of the Twice upon a Time series and puts a new spin on an old story. Beauty was named by her mother who was on her deathbed and, unfortunately, Beauty did not live up to her name. Prince Riley is supposed to be “princely” like his older brother but he is not interested in balls and royal occasions but wants to be a scientist. When Riley meets a witch she turns him into a hairy ugly beast. When Beauty’s father comes to the castle – you probably know what happens. This is a wonderful take on the story of “the only one who didn’t run away”. Reviewed by BPL volunteer EE.

this book was a little boring at first, but if you keep reading until the end, it gets better.

This is the most enjoyable book I've read this summer! Based on the classic fairy tale of "Beauty and the Beast," Mass fleshes out the story so that all the details make sense and all the characters have understandable personalities and motives. Well done!

I was disappointed that NYPL does not seem to have the other books in the "Twice Upon A Time" series. If they are even close to as good as this one, they would certainly be worth purchasing for the library. I know I want to read them!

Highly recommended for Grades 4-8. Appropriate as a read-aloud for younger children and can certainly be enjoyed by older students and adults.
