Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey-with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake-through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. Margaret Atwood projects us into a near future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining.

I enjoyed the concept of this dystopian world and wonder how the human footprint will continue in this world. Will the Crakers be able to make a better world?
The "why" of the destruction of mankind isn't answered. At the time of publication the world was different. Perhaps then, the action of destruction wasn't a plausible idea. But in today's world, with the crazy shootings occurring where one mad man decides the fate of a group of others, this destruction took on a different feeling for me.

A bleak dystopian novel where the world has been destroyed by disease. Sole survivor snowman tells the story of how one mad scientist got us here. --Lizzie G.

First in Atwood's dystopian MaddAddam trilogy. Followed by "The Year of the Flood" and "MaddAddam."

A philosophical look at genetic engineering that is dark and sad and beautifully written that will make you THINK about what we are doing to ourselves and the planet and where it will all lead. Read the whole trilogy!

This book starts out sort of slow, but the ending is definitely worth it! Margaret Atwood's imagination is unbelievable, and just like many of her novels, this one has quite the twist. Atwood's storytelling style with "Oryx and Crake"--going back and forth between past and present--allows you to be introduced to the main character's present life whilst increasingly showing glimpses of the past until the big reveal.

An excellent dystopian novel. As is typical of Atwood, it's more a novel of ideas than of action. It will make the reader think! Those who are loving The Handmaid's Tale renewed popularity right now should check this first book in Atwood's t MaddAddam trilogy out!

A very compelling look at the end of the world, narrated by someone who accidentally helped to cause it. Unlike many post-apocalyptic novels, the action in this one occurs mainly in our narrator's mind, as he struggles with memory and guilt. Very well-written and sophisticated take on the genre.

I love sci fi. I generally don't read dystopian fiction. This mix of sci fi, dystopian fiction and satire started slowly but became very interesting. Some of the science (spider goats) is real, and a lot of the sci fi sounds very plausible.
