"The gool cannot be seen, not properly, but Xantee, Lo and their friends sense its evil presence. It lurks in the jungle in rock clefts, an enemy from outside nature. And now a fragment of gool grips Hari by the throat, draining the life from him. They can hold it back with the force of their minds, but for how long? Xantee, Lo and Duro set out on a perilous mission to find the Dog King Tarl, Hari's father, and the ruined city of Belong. Can he help them find the source of the gool? Will they find it in time? And do they have the strength to destroy the mother gool to rid the world of this life-sucking force?"

I too did not enjoy ‘Gool’ – Salt Trilogy book 2 by Maurice Gee as much as I did ‘Salt’ Book 1. I found this book somewhat confusing. Doctor-at-Bass! T. A

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first (Salt). That being said, it was a good story. The themes were more moral commentary than political commentary, but the world was still interesting, especially the jungle people.

This is second in a wonderful series, following the first vlume "Salt". I am not generally a reader of fantasy but I found the creation of the world of Between and Deep Salt and all the other places described in these books was very compelling. Obviously there is a third volume to come. Read more at, which told me that #3, "The Limping Man" is coming in Spring 2011.
