I fell in love with this series after reading this, the first book. These stories are well told, written in the first person. But even more enjoyable than the stories themselves are Travis's observations on the foibles of humanity and his own tentative attempts at nobility. He notices the small details of life that tell much. These stories were written before there was such a thing as political correctness and it is refreshing to read them now and remember that there was such a time. Many of his observations, written over forty years ago have turned out to be remarkably prophetic, endowing the character with more insight than was apparent at the time. If you were born before 1970 I predict that you will thoroughly enjoy all or any one of this series. You will find yourself believing that Travis was a real living, breathing human and wishing that you could have the opportunity to share a drink with him and plumb the depths of his thoughts more deeply.

MacDonald's books have the best titles: The Deep Blue Goodbye, A Purple Place for Dying, A Tan and Sandy Silence - you know you're in for a hot and humid ride through the dark side of South Florida right up front!

You can't go wrong with John D.

I re-read the Travis McGee series every few years. I love his take on the world and his environmentalism. I wish John D. MacDonald was still around, he was getting better and better as time went on and I know he would have a lot to say about the state of the world now.

Many people read his books to try to figure out Travis Mcgee. Focus on the other characters and you will find the real story of Florida and all the warts on that lovely skin.
