Add a CommentMy kid loves Llama and this book was nice because it helped us talk about ordinary things we do and how even if we don't like errands, we like being together.
One caution: Llama Llama throws a massive fit in the store, throwing things, opening food and dropping it on the ground in the store. If your kid might decide to imitate a character, this won't be a good book for you. I do stop and discuss with my kid that Llama shouldn't do that.
I really appreciate the scene in the car so I can pitch car seats to my kid. You would think my kid would be okay with car seats, sitting in one for every ride, but he still hates it.
I use this book at Storytime every year on the day after Thanksgiving - for "Buy Nothing Day."
I also recommend it to people I see at stores whose youngster is having a meltdown!
The parents love it and can relate.
I loved Llama Llama Red Pajama because of the incredible use of facial expressions in the illustrations to tell the story. I loved the title of this book and was hoping it would be as good. I was disappointed. Dewdney, the author does not use facial expressions well. The illustrations are not as interesting.
The rhyming of the story does not flow well throughout the book. I found myself having to reread parts of it trying to make sense of it. The story line does not sit well with me either. Mama takes Baby Llama from playtime to go shopping (bribing him with a treat first of course). Then when Baby Llama has had enough and throws a tantrum which includes throwing food around, there are no consequences for him. She makes him help clean up the mess, but she happily gets him ice cream in the end. I can see the reality of the child's frustration in this story, but all I see it teaching is that children can behave badly when they are frustrated and parents should just excuse it away.
Would I recommend this book? NO
Perfect depiction of a toddler on a shopping trip who just doesn't care and has THE public meltdown that all parents dread. Mama did handle it very well (as stated in another comment).
Quite silly, but very cute too! Mama Llama handles a misbehaving little llama very well and little llama learns that shopping does not have to be all waiting.
Me and my sister read the whole 3 book Llama series and had alot of fun with reading it out loud!!!!
It was really funny!
A must read for any person who has ever tried to take a toddler to the store :)!
Quite possibly my FAVOURITE book of all time!!!! "Llama Llama out with Mama, shopping at the shop-o-rama...." LOVE it, and so do my girls! 5+++++ stars!
Another brilliant book - very easy for my son to relate to Little Llama, and great for approaching the topic of the emotion with a child.
One of the most effective books for toddlers that I've seen in a long time.
