David Shannon’s “A Bad Case of Stripes” is an entertaining children’s cautionary tale on what can happen if you live your life being what others want you to be instead of being yourself.

A thoroughly entertaining read for the elementary school set! An imaginative tale filled with outstanding illustrations that will teach both children and parents the importance of letting children be themselves.

I was in 2nd grade when my teacher read this book, and I absolutely loved it!! I usually forget the books that I've read or been read to, but this one stood out so much to me that I couldn't forget the name.

I love children books that have something meaningful behind the story. This book is awesome! My daughter loved it. We read it over and over. It doesn't get boring. Moral of the story is just be yourself. Love it!

This is a wonderfully illustrated book. It terrified by 6 year old though. I think because the girl is only cured by eating vegetables. My child is doomed if this happens to him in real life :)

The first thing I noticed about this book were the gorgeous illustrations. They are rich and colorful. I like the depth of the story where a little girl who doesn't act like herself--so she can please others--suddenly becomes everything else but herself. She becomes striped and feathered and treelike.
An older child would understand these transformations. A younger child would not only not understand, but could be very disturbed and frightened by the images. The book is advertized for ages 4-8. This is completely inappropriate. The youngest age range I would recommend this book to would be 2nd or 3rd grade. This book also has a higher vocabulary than would be appropriate for the younger children. I used this book in my classroom when I taught fifth grade.
Would I recommend this book? YES. For ages 8 and up.
