The perfect blend of suspense and something deeper.
Kevin Parson receives a threatening call on his cell phone--telling him that he has 3 minutes to confess his sin, or a bomb will go off in his car. Kevin manages to avoid the explosion, but the calls continue, as does the violence. What sin could the caller be referring to? Is there a serial killer on the loose, or is there another explanation? As Kevin and a childhood friend named Jennifer probe these mysteries, they uncover many hidden secrets from Kevin's past, but nothing seems to explain why the killer is targeting Kevin--unless the answer lies within Kevin himself.
The suspense never lets up, and the reader is kept guessing from the initial phone call to the twist at the end. The clues and riddles that the killer leaves add to the puzzle and fun of trying to figure things out. . He also creates some bizarre characters--like Kevin's extremely unbalanced family--that contribute to the creepy factor. But Dekker also builds the motivation of the crime on a spiritual/theological underpinning that allows him to explore deeper issues.

This book was a trip. I'm just stunned right now, not sure how to think or deal with it.
The pace was good and kept me hooked and thinking about what could be happening, but the last 100 pages were simply frustrating trying to read through as two theories were pretty much just punted back and forth so fast I got whiplash. The last couple chapters left me in shock and contemplation for days, yet I felt like it was a bit rushed at the end and I was disappointed by that.
Interesting book, left me confused and thrilled, but in some minor ways, let down.

I loved this book! Who would have ever seen that coming?! This book was intense, creepy, and suspenseful all at the same time. I recommend this book to anyone, but if you get scared easily, this may not be for you.

This book actually delivers the twist you never saw coming that so many others promise and never live up to. Truly thrilling and suspenseful.

A decent read, with a few thrills, but I couldn't bring myself to care about what was going on or the characters. 2.5/5.

Started off slowly, picked up a little, then boredom set in for the remaining three quarters, and then picked up again near the end.
Too much of what I call needles filler with an unbelievable plot. And what the heck is a seismic tuner anyway?
I gave it 2½ stars because I actually finished the book.

First encounter with this author, and certainly not my last. This thriller keeps you guessing till the very end. Pleasant surprise: for a change, not one swear word in the entire novel.

Coarse Language: Slight coarse language, not noticable.

bookgeek101 Mar 02, 2013

Violence: Slater does some terrible things to Kevin throughout the book.

bookgeek101 Mar 02, 2013

Frightening or Intense Scenes: The end is very intense, and when we see the beginning of his life, it is very sad and can be frightening. Slater could be scary for some.
