A perennial holiday cartoon from the Rankin-Bass factory. "Frosty the Snowman" is pleasant family fare but as "classics" go doesn't quite reach the heights of animated holiday offerings like "A Charlie Brown Christmas," "Dr. Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas" or even "Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol," all of which boast more memorable characters and songs.
Fine for the kiddies but maybe not as emotionally satisfying for adults, even nostalgically inclined boomers such as yours truly ;-)

Treacly (!!??) - Is that really the word that the snob below used in her comments to describe Frosty the Snowman?

I think that anyone who uses a word like "treacly" (especially to describe a kids' movie) is nothing but a snob 'cause they know damn-well that most people don't know what the hell that word means and they're trying to sound so educated, or whatever.

This snob also says (and I quote) - "I would rather have lumps of coal stuck in my eyes and stand outside all winter than watch Frosty the Snowman again." - Well, I wish that Miss Snob would also get all her fingers broken, as well, so that she can't type anymore. And that way we don't have to read any more of her "treacly" comments ever again.

I would rather have lumps of coal stuck in my eyes and stand outside all winter than watch Frosty the Snowman again. It's the kind of program station managers put on when they run out of Christmas shows, and anyway, most viewers will be eating turkey at that time. Treacly, action-free story (Frosty does little but walk around and say inane things in a whiny voice); competent but cheap-looking animation; and the music -- let's say the title song is the best one, and leave it at that. And you're going to be hearing that song A LOT.

First aired on TV (December 7, 1969) - Frosty the Snowman (which has a 25-minute running time) is a charming, animated Xmas special based on the song "Frosty the Snowman".

This cheerful presentation features the voices of comedians Jimmy Durante as the film's narrator (Durante's final performance in a film) and Jackie Vernon as the title character.

Like "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" - "Frosty, the Snowman" is yet another one of those timeless classics. This show is ranked at #4 on the list of top 10 best family holiday specials.

And, as the story goes - A magic, silk top-hat brings a snowman to life. With the temperature rising above freezing this means that Frosty could melt - So it's off to the North Pole.... Meanwhile - The original owner of the hat (a ruthless/greedy magician) decides he wants it back 'cause its special power means big bucks... Oooh... Is this story's suspense totally killing you, or what?..... (*Watch "Frosty" video-clip*)

"Frosty The Snowman" is one of the most charming Christmas movies of all time. Jimmy Durante's voice narration in the first classic is entrancing (especially if anyone is familiar with Jimmy's other films such as "Rupert: The Christmas Wish.") The plot is fun and meaningful, and the song will make the viewers smile. This film can help teach kids the wonder of sacrificing for another friend. While the second Frosty, "Frosty Returns", is good; it is not as charming as the first classic. With that being said, "Frosty Returns" is still very enjoyable and also teaches kids how to be a positive influence in the lives of others around them. These are two films the whole family will want to watch over and over again.

This copy won't play in my dvd player. The intro plays but won't advance. It might be a bad copy.
