I think this movie is about PTSD from war.

A slow and hypnotizing look at the life of a wander WWII veteran with PTSD who joins a cult. The movie showcases the best performances Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman have ever done. There's also the fantastic score by Johnny…

Great acting, but I did not care about any of the people in the story. A strange story indeed. I agree with another poster that JP played a repellent man perfectly. Would not recommend.

Not the most enjoyable film ever, but an impressive study of cult experience. Hoffman’s Hubbard look-alike was charming and charismatic whilst being the biggest creep among many. Phoenix’s character was scary and repellent, but served to…

Slow and boring, or deep and rich? Or victim of Scientologist down votes? I don't judge anyone who holds either of the first two opinions, because there's good reason for either view. This film is a mash of gorgeous and telling scenes,…

This movie kind of feels like it has a secret and it hints at it, but never quite gives you enough info to figure out what it's going for. I've seen it twice now, and I liked it more the 2nd time, but it remains a frustrating film.

I had such high hopes for this movie, but it just didn't deliver. Hoffman's performance may be the only reason to sit through this film.

Not easy to view, The Master is over two hours long. Difficult to sit through and understand, but if you watch the "extras" after you watch the movie, you'll have a better understanding. So, prepare to spend more than four hours on this.…

I expected so much more from the likes of these actors. I have appreciated all of them in other movies but this was a real stinker. The movie opens with Phoenix masturbating after having intercourse with a woman sand castle... there was…

This movie is not “lightly entertaining”; if you are looking for fluff…forget about this. This is a story that unfolds slowly. There is no “action” blood or gore, just pure drama. The acting by Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix…

Don’t bother with this movie. This is such a strange, bizarre and very long movie. The performances are good but it’s just a movie not worth watching.

I am a PT Anderson superfan, and incredibly fascinated by Scientology and its origins, but I just could not get into this movie. The performances (especially Hoffman) are amazing, but all together it was just odd and boring and blech.

Quite tedious to follow. I always enjoy period films and the depiction of this era is well done. Great costuming , lighting , locations, furniture, etc. That being said, the subject matter is not for the weak of heart, who wish to be…

THE MASTER is a period piece set in post-WWII America about an L. Ron Hubbard-type character, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman (a regular in Anderson's films), and his relationship to a messed-up, drunk veteran, played by Joaquin Phoenix.…

Saturated with a psychological edginess as well as a stifled eroticism, Paul Thomas Anderson’s piercing study on the cult mindset (Scientology itself is never mentioned, of course) features outstanding performances; most notably Joaquin…

Excellent performance by Phoenix and Hoffman, but the story goes nowhere...it ends where it began. We know he is somewhat unbalanced when the movie begins and we know that he is still unbalanced when the movie ends. So what? The…

I am a huge fan of P.T. Anderson and was incredibly excited for this film, but ultimately disappointed with the outcome. Hoffman is incredibly as always, and Phoenix does a good job playing a rather simple character, but the momentum was…

I watched it last night. I found the acting great and the nostalgic recreation of the 1950's, the era of my childhood, quite haunting. It is a movie worth watching again. As to meaning, it is quite enigmatic. Sad too watching Hoffman's…

As in more than a few movie which I feel are too orchestrated, I found myself feeling very remote from the characters. It's hard for me to be really critical of this movie though because I believe it is well intentioned and is one of…

What a disappointment....I only made it 22 minutes into the movie before I got so bored I had to stop the madness (and the movie). I thought this was going to be a good one and I rarely stop a film before it's finish. What a bummer.

The main problem is that the portrayal of the lead character would take an actor on the order of an Olivier, Brando, or Depp to pull it off without a hitch. And even they might not have been up to the challenge. To Mr. Hoffman's credit,…
